If God not be,
Nor Orion,
Or Alpha Centauri;

And if the “whirlwind”
Had revealed to Job
The ineffable mystery of the cosmos,

Would we be still seeking
To make sense
Of the senseless?

But if God be not,
Then no man has ever
Kissed a woman,

And I have never
Held a newborn
In my arms.
